Key workshop- England Cricket and Rugby
Nino was asked to join the World famous coach Vern Gambetta on the second day of his delivery at Loughborough University. Vern is considered the Founding Father of Functional Sports Training. He has worked with many teams including:
Baseball -
Director of Athletic Development- New York Mets 2004 -5. As Director of Conditioning pioneered conditioning for baseball with model program for Chicago White Sox 1987 – 96. Consultant to Cincinnati Reds 1996-97. University of Texas 2005.
Football -
Consultant to San Francisco Forty Niners 1979 – 82. Kansas City Chiefs 1990.
Nino’s delivery focused on dynamic and functional movement. All the coaches were highly motivated after Vern’s delivery and were ready to apply all the knowledge they had gained from this global coaching legend. Strength, speed, flexibility, balance and core strength must be ultimately delivered through dynamic movement. This dynamic movement is the vehicle of technical delivery. Harnessing the power of movement means a higher quality delivery of technical skills. Nino’s subject naturally followed on from the strength and conditioning components that Vern delivered.
The coaches were more than happy to be involved in advance drills such as the complex Four Pod drill. This drill focuses on the first but very important phase of directional change. The group also focused on how good alignment through movement can not only produce speed and efficiency but also prevent injury. Other drills included the linear front Glide. This drill forces the athlete to really concentrate on contact time with the surface. If contact time and force production can work in harmony mobility can easily be increased. All the drills were executed backwards as well as forwards, in pairs as well as individually. The ultimate over load for this particular session was to include reactive elements to the drill.
Nino said “It was a privilege to work with such a coaching legend, we never stop learning and listening to Vern Gambetta only reinforces this fact. I am pleased to say that we are keeping in touch and hope to meet up in Florida during a forth coming trip. As a coach I get the opportunity to work with so many professionals such as Richard Smith (Head of Sports Science) from the ECB National Academy and all the coaches from across England who attend the high level sessions. It is such a learning environment with so many of the coaches previously competing at the highest levels themselves”.
